A Spyder can make the grays on your screen both neutral, and the correct tone of gray. This can be useful in managing work to your printer, but is really only half the battle without output control as well. For black and white, output control can mean a very different thing than it does with color, and meticulous adjustment of curves or ramps by trial and error is possible, if not ideal; while for color the three dimensional nature of the process means that using special equipment and software is really the only effective choice.
