Digital BW, The Print

Jamie,

EAM is a coated paper and I would expect that an image adjusted to work on
EAM would print very differently on an uncoated paper like Somerset Velvet.
Perhaps in the earlier posts you mentioned people were dropping the word
"Enhanced". It gets a bit confusing as there are or have been Somerset
Velvet, Somerset Enhanced, Somerset Photo Enhanced Velvet, and perhaps other
names I am forgetting.

Paul Roark's RGB separation curves for the MIS-VM ink set were optimized for
EAM and Tyler Boley's for Hahnemule Photo Rag. These curves might work okay
with the Enhanced but I would expect that you would need to modify the
curves to get a good print from the uncoated Velvet. With the coated papers
the ink pretty much rides on the surface but with uncoated papers a portions
is going to be absorbed and you would need to account for that with the
curves or in your print adjustment.

The Piezo driver has paper profiles for EAM and four of the Somerset papers
so that might be an easier path is you want to proof on EAM and do finals on
the more expensive paper. In the end though I find you wind up doing a
certain number of work prints on the expensive paper since the final "look"
always seem to need a tweak or two or three.

Maybe someone who has worked with the uncoated Velvet and MIS-VM will offer
some advice.
