FWIW, there is a tab in nikon scan for "negative prescan", the default is
"automatic", try changing this to "low contrast - neutral" and scan as a
negative in greyscale.  Set the output gamma in preferences to match the
gamma you use in photoshop. Set the preview gamma to match your monitor
profile gamma. This should prevent clipping on most (if not all) silver
negatives. Make sure you scan in high bit mode as the scan may be low in
contrast.

This works on my ls-2000 using nikonscan 3.12

I've ordered the 8000 and I hope that this tab is active when using the 8000
as well.
