There are a few products in that price range that create profiles using a 
scanner rather than the most expensive part of a profiling package; the 
spectrophotometer. Unfortunately I found such packages to only do a fair job 
with most ink jets (for something like a Fuji Pictrography, I've had great 
results). 

So I can't really recommend anything in that price range. A good spectro will 
run about $1500 (the EyeOne is really the best bang for the buck). A software 
package on top of that will set you back $600-$900 on top of the EyeOne.
