I think film is and a good scanner is the key. Expose for the shadows 
and develop for the highlights. There is no counterpart for this with a 
digital camera. First most digital cameras have a max of 12 (some of the 
medium format digital backs have 16 ) bits dynamic range and there are 
no provisions for compressing the curve prior the data capture. In any 
digital system you normally lose 1.5 to 2 bits worth of dynamic range. 
With film you have options of  exposure and developer combinations to 
capture a much greater dynamic range in the image and then fit it into 
the dynamic range of the film. There are scenes that cannot be shot with 
a digital camera without either dumping shadows detail or saturating 
highlights.

If either end of the digital technology is "not there yet" I'd say it's 
the camera end.
