Curing bad 1280 MIS chips

2002-09-01 by jimhayes361

I haven't been following the threads on bad MIS carts too much, but I
guess another problem is getting the chips to register when inserting
a MIS-filled cart or a CFS. After a few e-mails and phone calls to Bob
Zeiss, and my own chip blowing experiences I thought I'd relate a
solution, in the event it is what's happening to folks. It isn't
documented in the CFS instructions and only briefly touched upon on
the MIS site buried in the FAq's or somewhere obsucure:

It's probable that the MIS chips can get permanently messed up when
installed, due to the fact that they make contact with the 1280
connector "live" and both the 1280 and the chip get confused. I found
the following greatly reduces getting a "bad" chip...

1) With the old carts to be removed still in place, make sure the head
is not in the cart change position ( press orange button to send carts
to right parking position) and press off button. Wait a few seconds
for things to settle and UNPLUG printer. Wait one minute.

2) With a small screwdriver or your finger press down on the white
post that is on the left front side of head, which locks it in place.
This releases the head. As the post is held down slide the head over
to the left all the way.

3) If you have an anti-static wrist strap, wear it. If not, just
before you pick up the cart(s), touch ground (CPU case, water pipe,
etc). Static charge can zap chips. Remove old carts and install new
ones. Make sure they are firmly seated, even 1/32 inch too high can
misalign chip with connector.

4) Gently move head back to parking position to the right with hand.
The post will not lock into place.

5) Plug in printer. Then turn on. The white post should push up into
position. If you still get a red light turn off printer and unplug for
one minute, then turn back on.

6) If you still can't get printer to function, the chip was bad before
you installed cart or the tines of 1280 connector are bent.

A bit of a pain really, but with MIS chips I get fewer DOA's this way.
