Hi Rick,
I bought the Canon about a year ago and am very happy with it. As for your
specific questions:
- I've tried FARE, both with Canon's own software and with Vuescan (which
is, btw, definitely better) and decided to go without it. It slightly (but
noticeably, IMO) blurs the image, and you anyway have to manually retouch
the biggest film defects (scratches, for example), so I end up spotting each
image (it ain't so bad, you can save a lot of time if you use PS
dust&scratch filter on selected areas of the picture, such as skies). The
only comparison I can make is with the ICE I have on my previous Nikon
LS-30, and I can say that ICE is probably a tad better (but I didn't use
that, too).
- Fluorescent lighting should NOT be a disadvantage: LED lighting is
repsonsible for all out-of-focus problems the Nikon scanners reportedly
have.
Generally speaking, I find the FS4000 a *great* improvement over the LS-30
(but obviously the Nikon 4000 probably is as well), and highly recommend
Vuescan rather than Canon's FilmGet. I've read about the Canon having a low
DMax, so there may be problems if you scan slides: with negatives (B&W,
color or chromogenic) I never found this to be a problem at all.
Hope this helps,
Alex

first off, thanks to all who are helping out on this scanner issue.
this is a topic i've been agonizing about for some time, and i am looking to
make a decision already. your comments are extremely helpful for me.
i'm curious to learn more about the canon. it's half the price of the nikon
4000. i am aware that it's much slower (not firewire), and it has
flourescent lighting vs. LED.
questions: how does FARE compare to ICE? and, is there anyone else in
addition to jerry who will vouch for the clarity of the lens? and in the
long run, is it really much of a disadvantage to have a florescent light vs.
LED?
in a few days i'm going to buy one of these things and i'll get out of
everyone's hair. in the meantime, thanks a lot for your help.

It isn't much better than the canon. The canon has the sharpest lens
available, thus making an image the sharpest you can get in an under
$1000 scanner. I've read this in 3 different reviews of this scanner.
