Check into the Canon 4000. Great scanner, and great price.

B&H has the Microtek 4000T for $599 right now, I think that scanner is the
same as the polaroid.

whoh. i was at b&h last week, and the salesrep strongly recommended a
microtek 4000dpi scanner for around $1200. now i look on the website and it
shows the only microtek 4000 dpi scanner is the one for $599. was there a
mistake? a price cut?

by the way, he said that this microtek scanner was better than the nikon
ls-4000 for non-chromogenic black and white film (cause you can't use ICE),
at any price. and much better than the canon.

are there two microtek scanners? if not, seems to me the microtek might
just be the best value here.

FireWire connection, other than that I really don't know. I used to
have the 4000t before I got my Minolta, it did a very good job. When
the tf came out, I looked at the spec's but didn't see where the
difference lay.

The Tf is an upgrade to the T. Scans in 42 bits instead of 36, and claims
Dmax of 4.3, heh heh ya right, that just means they improved the shadow
response over the 4000t. It also has multi-pass scanning for reduced noise
in the shadows, this may be where some of the improved dynamic range specs
come from, who knows, ooops...lets not go there <g>.

I just ordered one (a 'T'), been shooting a lot more 35mm lately and I'm not
happy with my Agfa T2500 performance for that format. The price is right!

It isn't much better than the canon. The canon has the sharpest lens

RE: [Digital BW] Best 35mm BW scanner thinking

first off, thanks to all who are helping out on this scanner issue.
this is a topic i've been agonizing about for some time, and i am looking to
make a decision already. your comments are extremely helpful for me.

i'm curious to learn more about the canon. it's half the price of the nikon
4000. i am aware that it's much slower (not firewire), and it has
flourescent lighting vs. LED.

questions: how does FARE compare to ICE? and, is there anyone else in
addition to jerry who will vouch for the clarity of the lens? and in the
long run, is it really much of a disadvantage to have a florescent light vs.
LED?

in a few days i'm going to buy one of these things and i'll get out of
everyone's hair. in the meantime, thanks a lot for your help.

RE: [Digital BW] Best 35mm BW scanner thinking

2002-09-02 by Alessandro Pardi

Hi Rick,

I bought the Canon about a year ago and am very happy with it. As for your
specific questions:

- I've tried FARE, both with Canon's own software and with Vuescan (which
is, btw, definitely better) and decided to go without it. It slightly (but
noticeably, IMO) blurs the image, and you anyway have to manually retouch
the biggest film defects (scratches, for example), so I end up spotting each
image (it ain't so bad, you can save a lot of time if you use PS
dust&scratch filter on selected areas of the picture, such as skies). The
only comparison I can make is with the ICE I have on my previous Nikon
LS-30, and I can say that ICE is probably a tad better (but I didn't use
that, too).
- Fluorescent lighting should NOT be a disadvantage: LED lighting is
repsonsible for all out-of-focus problems the Nikon scanners reportedly
have.

Generally speaking, I find the FS4000 a *great* improvement over the LS-30
(but obviously the Nikon 4000 probably is as well), and highly recommend
Vuescan rather than Canon's FilmGet. I've read about the Canon having a low
DMax, so there may be problems if you scan slides: with negatives (B&W,
color or chromogenic) I never found this to be a problem at all.

Hope this helps,

Alex

Rick,

"best" is not really a quantifiable term... I personally believe the Leaf45
is THE best B&W film scanner there is for 35mm film, it scans at 5080, and
no other film scanner, short of a PMT scanner does that. It scans B&W as a
single B&W channel, which, IMO, gives better tonality to the scans. It
isn't the fastest scanner in the world...but it does things no other current
scanner can. There is also a 35mm only version of this scanner, that goes
for under $500 or so, and scans at 4000. The software is old, but complete,
and will give you gorgeous scans. The Leaf scanners aren't for
everyone...because of their age...but the results, IMO, are unsurpassed for
B&W.

I have the spec sheets on-line if you're interested.

Austin,

I would like the spec sheet for the Leaf. I'm really debating on a
new digital camera, or going with a standard 35. If the 35 route,
then probably the Leaf. Probably get one anyway to scan in my old
negatives. Thanks,

Barry Gilliand

Granted it's a pot of money, but our Imacon 848 scans 35mm at 8000.

RE: [Digital BW] Best 35mm BW scanner thinking

2002-09-04 by Austin Franklin

Hi Stan,

That must be pretty new, because the older units didn't do that!

How much is a "pot of money" BTW? Can it scan the film if it's in a strip,
or do you have to cut each and every frame out?

Regards,

Austin
