The sensor is indeed 6MP but as I understand it more pixels can be devoted to image capture since the sensor doesn't have to use several pixels to determine the color of a single pixel -- everything is monochrome. According to Kodak's site, TIFF files come out in 12MB or 18MB depending on how you want the data configured.
