Jerry, Not a silly question at all. The coatings used on the inkjet papers is one area where it seems we have little knowledge. For the different companies I imagine the specific formulas and application techniques they use are closely guarded secrets just as the silver emulsions are. To a certain extent the Dmax seems to be related to just how much ink you can pour onto a paper before it just puddles and dries with a blotchy look. I would guess that there is a balance between maximum ink per area, without bleeding that is properly bonded to the coating and paper. I wonder how much is mechanical and how much is chemical. I suspect the chemical side plays a role in fading and warming. I seem to recall that Eclipse was originally marketed as having "multiple receiver layers" or something like that. Sounded like there were trying multiple coatings on the paper. Maybe one of the paper company representatives can give us some info.
