once you convert down to 8 bits and you should see a nice, 
> smooth histogram.

But I dont, and I'd like to understand why I dont have a nice smooth 
histogram ? As I said in the originaal post there has been "moinimal" 
editing and therefore data loss ? Any ideas how I might preserve the 
image and achieve the "smooth" histogram?
