Dmax is visual density and it is a property specifically of the inks laid down when you print 100% black (and of course the whiteness of the paper). The numbers that I mentioned were properly read using a densitometer which is the correct instrument for measuring dmax. Most spectrophotometers will also give you visual...which is approximately dmax.
