Digital BW, The Print

Hi,
I don't even know if I should be posting to this list.  You all seem to 
know so much about all of this.
Here is my question:
I just bought an HPdeskjet 940c.  Is there any way to set the settings to 
get excellent quality b/w prints?  I have tried setting it to "best" and I 
scan at at least 600 dpi, but the prints are not as good as I had hoped.
i get much better (with dots) from my HP 600 dpi laser.
