Godfrey DiGiorgi is the real guy to ask about this since he actually works
at Apple but I suspect that Quickdraw these days is totally happy to work in
16 bits, not least because the screen is drawn using Quickdraw, and supports
16-bit color. In any case, if there were such a limitation, it is lifted in
OS X.
