PiezoBW upgrade available this week

PiezoBW upgrade available this week

2001-09-09 by Martin Wesley

Jon Cone announced late yesterday that version 6.0 of PiezoBW will be
available next week. The upgrade price for those who purchased before
June 1, 2001 will be $49.95.

I gather e-mails will go out to registered users as soon as they are
ready to start accepting orders.

New features include additional paper profiles, the ability to print
from 16-bit and all supported printers will be on one disk.

The 1280 version is still due out by the end of the month.

Using PS, a Mac, and the Epson driver, I can send a 16-bit file to print. I
understand that somewhere in the path to print that file is being converted
down to 8-bit. I *think* I remember Bruce Fraser saying that the OS (Mac at
least (Quick Draw)) is the limiting factor in the chain, preventing the
final print from actually being printed in 16-bits.

I wonder if this update will just allow for what I'm already able to do with
the Epson driver, or if it will allow true 16-bit printing. I've always
wondered if the 16-bit benefit was being mitigated by it's ultimate
conversion to 8-bit en route to print. I'd love to hear from anyone when
they've tried this driver - does it make a difference?

Godfrey DiGiorgi is the real guy to ask about this since he actually works
at Apple but I suspect that Quickdraw these days is totally happy to work in
16 bits, not least because the screen is drawn using Quickdraw, and supports
16-bit color. In any case, if there were such a limitation, it is lifted in
OS X.

Johnny, are you using OS X? Can you print with all the Epson desktop
printers without hassles using OS X? I didn't think you could, so
haven't upgraded yet.

I've got OS X installed on a separate partition and I've been experimenting
with it but I'm not ready to transition quite yet. In particular, the OS X
10.1 update which is due out in the next couple of weeks promises to make
the system much more stable, and faster too. Luckily you can run it in
tandem with your present OS 9 system which makes life simpler.

Because Photoshop doesn't yet run natively in OS X I still run it
exclusively in OS 9.2.1. However I'm really warming to OS X. It really feels
like the future. It feels a million miles removed from the current Intel
crop. I think on a fast G4, and even more so on the G5 which is due out
later this year or early next, it is going to rock. It already runs WAY more
apps than I expected it to, and rather gracefully at that. I think the Epson
drivers are now working okay although I haven't proved it for myself.

If you have the disk space I recommend installing it someplace and tinkering
with it... you slowly start to see what all the fuss is about.

However I do have two reservations about the whole situation. The first is
that for new apple purchasers who buy a CPU right now they get a mess of a
system, with both OS X and OS 9 installed. That's all right for geeks like
me but my niece is getting a G4 when she goes to study art at school and
she's not going to 'get' what's going on AT ALL.

Secondly, OS X is a beautiful piece of work BUT I think we have to kiss
goodbye to the adage that the Mac is easy to use. OS X is very complex and
powerful, and it has a beautiful surface sheen, but I think it is no easier
to use than (say) Windows 2000 or Windows ME. No harder either, but you get
the feeling the Mac just went from being the friendly little volkswagen
beetle to a purring V8 Jaguar.

Thanks Johnny. i could devote one of my 4 hard drives to the OS 10 and
see if I like it. What happens when you try to print to an 1160 or 1280
from that system, does the image print?

I've never used an ibm clone, so have no idea how to use the OS. I've
seen them of course, and you couldn't give me one free.

Carolyn,

Check out John's website. You will find the link in the
groups "Bookmarks" under "Photographers." Definitely worth a nice
long look.

There are a lot of great photographers' sites in there if you haven't
gone exploring yet. Lot's of inspiration.

Martin

Thanks Martin,

I've visited John's site a while back... I was pleased to see him on
Michaels. Luminous-Landscape has been in my bookmarks for years.

I'm in complete awe of the talent on this list!
