I know a guy who puts the neg in one way, scans just over half of it, then puts it in the other way around and scans the other half (keeping all the settings the same). He then stitches the two halves together in Photoshop. It's a little clunky, but if you've already got a 35mm scanner and don't need to do too many panoramics, it might get you by.
