Since no one else took the bait ("...again, WHY is it so
> much better..."), I'll throw my 2 cents in.
I haven't used Polariod or Nikon scanning software, I've used two
flavors of Agfa software, one that comes with their cheap scanners
and one that they ship with their more expensive scanners, and the
Canon software that comes with their 35mm film scanner. Based on that
background, I'd say the advantages of Vuescan are:
1. It makes it pretty easy to get a so-called "raw" scan
2. If you want to try different adjustments within Vuescan on an
image, you can do so using the in-memory copy of the image. With most
other scanning software, you would have to re-scan the neg each time,
which would be a much slower process.
3. It comes with a bunch of canned curves to handle color negative
films.
4. For some reason, it manages to run the scanner faster than the
manufacturer's software.
