Thanks Peter. I see I have to some more study on this program, but on
the
mac, it doesn't seem to be all that intuitive. Once again, WHY is it so
much better than, say, the Agfa or Polaroid or Nikon software?

For BW I got better, 'fatter' histos than with silverfast or the epson
twain. For colour it varies greatly between scanner types I've found -
sometimes generating weird casts. Just scan as a 16bit 'image' file at full
optical res with the endpoints wide open if you are having problems with
them. Adjust in PS so you have one pixel clipping at each end and then
compare that scan with your fave method - as a raw scan mind you.

Re: Vuescan

Since no one else took the bait ("...again, WHY is it so
> much better..."), I'll throw my 2 cents in.

I haven't used Polariod or Nikon scanning software, I've used two
flavors of Agfa software, one that comes with their cheap scanners
and one that they ship with their more expensive scanners, and the
Canon software that comes with their 35mm film scanner. Based on that
background, I'd say the advantages of Vuescan are:

1. It makes it pretty easy to get a so-called "raw" scan
2. If you want to try different adjustments within Vuescan on an
image, you can do so using the in-memory copy of the image. With most
other scanning software, you would have to re-scan the neg each time,
which would be a much slower process.
3. It comes with a bunch of canned curves to handle color negative
films.
4. For some reason, it manages to run the scanner faster than the
manufacturer's software.

Re: Vuescan

2002-12-04 by Mark Hahn

It is only "so much better" because some other scanner software is so
bad. Frankly, with my EPSON Perfection 2450 dummy software I get
better starting point scans from the scanner than from Vuescan, but
with my Dual Scan II (who's software really sucks) I only get good
scans when I use Vuescan. Vuescan does it's job pretty well...
