Keith/Julian, Thanks for the response. I think I've got it now...the CCDs are spaced 1/3200 of an inch horizontally while the stepper motor moves the array 1/1600 inch vertically with each "step". I have always avoided any setting > 1600ppi on my 1680, but now I won't hesitate to use 3200 if the situation demands it.
