Jerry, you'll find endpoint selection under the 'colour' tab - there are no
curves as such.

Jerry,

I used to wonder about that..

Now, I generally agree with Dave Tobie that I really just want my
scanner software to shuttle the data (as intact and untweaked as
possible to my machine)...

I want the scanner software to do things like adjust the hardware for
exposure and focus, etc. BUT I don't want it massaging my data in
software (even though Ed's levels software seems better than the PShop
defaults) -- it's like scanner profiling -- it's a nice idea, BUT if I'm
correcting things in photoShop, I'd rather have control and work from
the original data... Instead of taking a chance on having some lost in
conversion. Heck, if I need the speed, I can create curves and batch
process in PShop to the same effect..

All I do is set the endpoints slightly outside the data - you can check this
with the before and after histos - and scan as a 16bit image file. Although
I can't get good colour with it (or silverfast) so am back on the Twain.

Julian,

How do you set endpoints outside the data? Vuescan seems to express the
endpoints as percentage values frmo 0 to 100% where you can clip data but
not compress it. Can you set values lower than 0% or higher than 100%, or
is it simply a matter of readjusting the endpoints using the levels or
curves tools in PS afterwards?

Re: [Digital BW] Vuescan

2002-11-29 by Julian Thomas

If you are getting clipping with the endpoints set at 0 and 0 you are at the
limits of your scanner or the neg is bad. I sometimes get shadow clipping on
the epson 1680 on a bad neg (image scans give you a neg so white is black
etc). Using the Scan Histo you can see if what you set will clip. The
default setting is black 0 and hilight 1 - which needs to be ) IMO. Also you
can try adjusting the Image Curve to get a good histo - you'll need to reset
the endpoints though.
I want a BW scan in PS which is basically Raw data with as little
interference as possible - then do as much curves/levels etc in 16bit in PS.

Re: [Digital BW] Vuescan

2002-12-01 by A. Huntley

Jerry,

Some options within VueScan, like the scanning DPI available, are scanner
dependent. From what I've seen with my Expression
1680, it appears that the max scan DPI available for selection is the
optical limit; 1600, in my case. Levels adjustment is done
via the Black/White sliders in the, I believe, "Colors" tab. Make sure you
have "Advanced" set within the first tab. I have not
found any curves adjustment capability available. If any of you experienced
VueScan users out there know how to effect a curves
adjustment, please post. You use a Mac, right? I believe VueScan HAS to run
from the folder on the desktop. You can, however,
direct your output files to another folder.

Hope this helps.

Alan - I can get 3200 out of my 1680 with Vuescan. According to Ed it is
3200 in one direction and interpolated in the other.

Julian,

Not to ask a dumb question...what does 3200 in one direction mean? I thought
the Epson 1680 had a top-end optical resolution of
1600, and that anything over this number--I think you can go to 12,800 or
something like that--was interpolated.

It's FAAAAAR from dumb..

The horizontal resolution is controlled by the placement of the ccds
horizontally. That's resolution set simply by physical proximity and is
static and unchangeable.

The vertical resolution is controlled by the stepper motor, and a scan
pass is done at each 1600th/inch.

Hopefully you can see that while it may be easy enough to get ccds lined
up horizontally within 1/3200 of an inch, it is another thing to
reliably and repeatedly get increments of 1/3200th out of a motor drive..

Kennedy McEwen went through an amazing series of discussions on this and
interference patterns, grain resolution, etc. some time ago over on the
x7x list (maybe in the Spring?).. If you go there and search the
archives, you can find them, quite enlightening..

As Ed explained it - and I'm no expert on the math or mechanics - the res
of the 1680 is 1600x3200. A full optical resolution is 1600, but you can go
to 3200 and only have data interpolated in the X axis of the scanner head
travel. Again - I think... Suffice it to say that at prints up to 12x12" I
can't see any difference between 1600 and 3200.

RE: [Digital BW] Vuescan

2002-12-05 by Steven Chambers

Julian,

As a fellow 1680 user I would agree. However I have noticed one
significant difference when scanning at 1600 v 3200. It relates to post
processing the image in PS using unsharp mask sharpening. I find the
3200 image easier to sharpen without throwing the image over the edge.
Try sharpening an image at the two resolutions with the same unsharp
mask settings - the 3200 is far less 'twitchy'!

As Ed explained it - and I'm no expert on the math or mechanics - the
res of the 1680 is 1600x3200. A full optical resolution is 1600, but you
can go to 3200 and only have data interpolated in the X axis of the

up to 12x12" I can't see any difference between 1600 and 3200.

Keith/Julian,

Thanks for the response. I think I've got it now...the CCDs are spaced
1/3200 of an inch horizontally while the stepper motor moves the array
1/1600 inch vertically with each "step". I have always avoided any setting >
1600ppi on my 1680, but now I won't hesitate to use 3200 if the situation
demands it.

No Alan, I think you have that the wrong way round.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
