Re: [Digital BW] B&W on ColorLife , Epson 960

You might also want to look at Ilford Gallerie Classic Gloss
paper, which makes the same claims for longevity, does not have
a "plastic" look, and also makes very nice duotone prints with
Epson dye inks. It also seems to have a slightly wider gamut
than ColorLife, at least with images I have printed side-by-side.

In my experimenting around I tried printing a greyscale image
on
Epson ColorLife paper using the Epson 960 printer with 6 color
dye
inks. Got good results. Printed at 1440 X 2880 dpi from duotone
image
and got a beautiful tinted photo. This ink/paper combo permanence

is listed on the Epson site as 27 years by Wilhelm. Not bad.

The pros are:
No metamerism (a dye ink)
Consistant sheen (a dye ink)
Stock, reliable inks
Buttery transitions
The ability to tint at will
No color shifts

The cons are:
27 years isn't as long as 75 years
Paper has a kind of plastic look
Only texture choice is semigloss
Image is more fragile than when printed on conventional paper

(Epson says watch out for water and don't touch for at least
24hrs
after printing)
Can only print to 8.5 inch width with the 960 (a dandy printer,
BTW)

Conclusion:
Quadtone on EAM or cotton is still my first choice for B&W. The
above
combo is my second choice (as of today).
