I compared the prints you sent with the 1280's "smooth" setting on and off.
At a 800 dpi scan resolution the lines of the test chart are slightly softer
with the "smooth" on.  The standard deviations  (what I use as a measure of
unevenness within a uniform density patch of the step wedges) were
essentially the same.  So, it softened the image detail without having any
noticeable effect on the smoothness of the uniform tones.  I would opt for a
hair more sharpness and leave the "smooth" setting in the off position.
