OpenPrintMaker 1.02 - now a free download!

2003-03-28 by Antonis Ricos

I just checked the new bowhaus site:

http://www.bowhaus.com/inkjetcontrol/

You can now download the Printing part of the new software for free, including
a bunch of profiles for the 1280, 2200 and 7000.

What gives, you ask?.... those who know the story of Open Source code can
tell it better than I can. But briefly, the software that bowhaus markets as 2
applications - Inkjet Control (IJC) and OpenPrintMaker (OPM) - have different
licenses. IJC is built on proprietary code and is sold and licenced like any
commercial software. This is the program that makes profiles. OPM, however,
which actually accepts an image file and runs the printer, is built on Open
Source code and hence belongs in the public domain (also the reason for the
name).

As a result, you can download OPM right now and, if the profiles available fit
your printer/ink/paper choices, you can be off to the races - for free. You also
get to see what OPM does and doesn't do (like no custom page sizes, no roll
functions for the 7000, max page size 24x36, but a nice image adjust feature
for brightness and contrast).

Ah, but not so fast: The blender portion of OPM (where you can pick 2 profiles
and blend between them) will not work without IJC. And, of course, you also
can't make new profiles, or tweak the canned ones. For that you have to pay
for IJC.

As a reminder - this is for Mac OS 8 and 9 only.
