Ed, I've had dozens of zoom lenses over the years, Nikon, Canon, Tokina, 
Sigma, Leica, etc. NONE maintained
sharpness if you focused at the wide angle position, and then zoomed way 
in. (However the Autofocus will refocus
for you), but if you were in manual mode, it just didn't work.
