Re: printers....replace or repair

2003-04-13 by bob_michaels

If you can live with 8 1/2 x 11 as a max print size, Epson web site
has refurb 890 (narrow carriage 1280) for $185 with a $100 rebate. For
net $85 (free shipping & new printer warranty), I bought one just to
do color since my 1280 has hextone inks in the CIS. Since it came with
new ink carts, I figure the actual printer was pretty cheap. If you
can live with the size limitation, it's something to think about.

for a couple of years. I use the CFS MIS-vm The prints after Paul's
curves were added were very dark. I printed squares of the separate
cartridge positions and they started looking strange except for the
black position. The tubes were correctly positioned and the swabs from
the bottles looked fine. Nozzle checks fired but the lower group
seemed a little darker than they should. I also printed the Epson test
sheet from the pdf file that the service guy sent me. Was not good
tonally. I committed the printer to the local Authorized Epson
hospital. The owner eventually (while we were on the phone) drew some
pigment from the yellow position and told me it was dark. Said there
is a great possibility that the cartridge could have a split and the
pigments were mixing. I am going to get new cartridges for him at his
suggestion.

is not sure yet if this head is firing properly. He also said that
Epson probably won't guaranty a new head after this length of time. I
am also close enough to the mandatory maintenance time where he says
it will stop printing soon so it does need maintenance. I have a 1280
but would still need another printer to do color and b/w. He has some
1270's which I could get a deal on or I could possibly spring for a
2200 and fast for a while. Would love to have my 1160 run or find
another but that may not happen. WHICH WAY SHOULD I GO!! I'm old and
retired but full of life. The stock market didn't kill me but hasn't
made me happy either. Advice kindly accepted. Thank you all.
