Its somewhat related...but not completely...my guess is that it is related to batch to batch variations in the grade of PVA that they are using...PVA is a bad polymer for an application like this...poor adhesion and water sensitivity...but my guess is that's what gives them the black edge...no one else uses it to the best of my knowledge.
