First I use a cloth or paper towel to wipe off any residue on the bar, making sure to get the cloth completely around the bar. Then I use sewing machine oil. I carefully put a couple drops on the bar -- not too much, to avoid it dripping down where it should not go -- and immediately get the print head to spread it.
