squeaky bar on 1160- grease it?

squeaky bar on 1160- grease it?

2003-04-24 by jfobart

5 years ago I used to work in a computer shop as a repair tech, and
we used to get lots of squeaky HP's coming through the door. We had
some special kind of grease (of course whose name escapes me know
when I need it!), and we'd just lube the bar ever so lightly, run
some test prints and usually the squeak went away.

Well, my 1160 started making an awful squeak/screech today, and it
seems to be the same problem as those HP's I use to work on.

Anybody have an recommendations for a grease or metal lube to use on
the bar, that won't damage anything in the printer?

Thanks for the guidance!
-Jason

I do it with sewing machine oil or Philips contact cleaner spray... Both
work fine.

First I use a cloth or paper towel to wipe off any residue on the bar,
making sure to get the cloth completely around the bar.
Then I use sewing machine oil. I carefully put a couple drops on the bar --
not too much, to avoid it dripping down where it should not go -- and
immediately get the print head to spread it.

Don't really "oil it," just put the oil on and wipe it off.

Epson uses some special lubes, including a very expensive one for the
nylon gears.

The key is make sure it is NOT "petroleum based" (it should say on the
label) such as Vaseline. These will dedgrade the nylon components.

Grain Filter or Something Like It?

2003-05-02 by Barbara White

Does anyone know of a filter for photoshop that will simulate film
grain and let you pick the size of the grain-balls? I have a bunch of
b&W infrared negs that have a dark blotchyness in the clear skies and
need to somehow get rid of it. (Too much blotchyness for cloning) I've
tried selecting, using gaussian blur and then gaussian noise, which
works pretty well, but it's only one size. And you can see the
difference next to the larger size. And the grain on these negs is
pretty large. I also tried the Film Grain filter under Artistic Filters
and it doesn't seem to give you a choice of size of grain, either.
Maybe there's a third party one out there I don't know about.

I think it happened from the development, somehow, not in the scans,
because I can see it in the contact sheets. These negs are from
Cambodia, and I'm not going back there any time soon, so I'm desperate
to find a solution. ANY suggestions will be gratefully accepted!!
Thanks.

Barbara,

Try giung in the opposite direction, i.e., get rid of the blotchy
noise, while retaining the large grain of IR. A realy cool tool is
NeatImage. It is a stand alone program.

Good luck.

It looks really great, but, alas, I'm on a Mac. And it's not for mac,
as yet.

Thanks anyway.
