My thanks to one and all for the info and suggestions-frankly, I 
never expected to get this much of a response. I now have a couple 
of promising solutions, I'll try them and get back if I'm not 
successful.

Move to quarantaine

This moves the raw source file on disk only. The archive index is not changed automatically, so you still need to run a manual refresh afterward.
