  the RIP's discussed here, Imageprint, PosterPrint, Colorburst et al 
are not dedicated boxes. Hardware RIP's are usually associated with 
Imagesetters. The RIP's talked about here are software.  People are 
enjoying RIP's for more than the original purposes required in the 
prepress/offset press industry. exciting and expensive.
