I have both 1280 & 890. So far as I can tell they are exactly the same except the width. They even share an instruction book. If you not going to print over 8x10, AND you can find an 890, they are a real deal. I paid $85 for mine (refurbished which is essentially new) at the Epson on line store. I do think Epson is out of 890's though and may not make any more since they just didn't sell until marked way down. Too bad.
