Epson 890 vs 1280

Epson 890 vs 1280

2003-05-20 by larrysmith79601

This is my first effort to get into the digital B&W printing arena.

I am planning on using MIS B&W inks, and do not need to print
anything over 8x10.

Is there a reason I should purchase an Epson 1280 instead of an Epson
890? They seem to be the same except for the width of paper they will
accept.

Or - is there a better option?

Thanks,
Larry

If you will never need to go more than 8x10, then you shouldn't need the
additional expense of the wider carriage. Apparently CIS or CFS systems (I
know, I know, the word "systems" is redundant) are available for it, so
that will help your ink bills.

I have both 1280 & 890. So far as I can tell they are exactly the same
except the width. They even share an instruction book. If you not
going to print over 8x10, AND you can find an 890, they are a real
deal. I paid $85 for mine (refurbished which is essentially new) at
the Epson on line store. I do think Epson is out of 890's though and
may not make any more since they just didn't sell until marked way
down. Too bad.

the 890 is great. a cheap way to play with inkjet
black and white. i thought i would be fine doing just
8x10ish prints too, but now i want to go bigger...
though the 1280 still wouldn't have been big enough.
good luck finding one.

the only other difference is compatibility with
third-party software makers. i have tried to work with
OPM/IJC and found that it wouldn't work with the 890,
despite the fact that it does work for the 1280. i do
not know about other RIP software--but if you intend
to use one you should check to be sure the 890 is
supported and not just the 1280.
