Re: [Digital BW] Portra B&W

I shoot Portra at its rated speed.

I don't remember how XP2 works; does it have the orange mask or does it look
like B&W film? That may influence the results you are seeing. It depends
on how the lab sets up their processing. Color film printed as B&W will be
very low contrast; B&W film (or chromogenic that looks B&W) printed as color
will have blinding contrast.

Daniel, I'm very interested in the XP2, but the

I regurlarly shoot XP2 at anything from 80 to 1600 on the same roll of
film without any problems. It's rated by Ilford for as low as 50, but I
found that it was easy to get blown out highlights when I went that low,
so I use 80 instead. 1600 is very grainy, but sometimes it's better to
get a grainy shot than nothing at all.

I tested XP2 with different ISO settings here:

I hardly ever lose detail in my XP2 shots, no matter what I do. The
scans I get are really flat with low contrast, but usually looks good
once I do some adjustments in photoshop.

XP2 grain in ISO 800 - Is it grain really?

2003-05-21 by Loris Medici

Daniel I think this is not grain what you see in the ISO 800 image. It
is more likely the scanner's noise (exagerrated due to low [signal /
noise] ratio - caused by the thin negative). Thank you very much for the
well executed/presented demonstration - very helpful and informative.

Regards,
Loris.
