Sad News

2003-05-16 by Clayton Jones

Hello All,

I received news this evening that Jerry Olson passed away
unexpectedly. I got this second hand so I don't have any
details. Apparently it was within the past day or two.

The information was relayed to me from another photographer who lives
in Greece with whom I've had some email correspondence, and who also
corresponded with Jerry. He called me this evening from Washington
where he is at a business conference. He was calling his US friends
just to say hi and spoke with Jerry's wife who gave him the news. He
doesn't have internet access so he asked me if I'd post this in the
forum.

Jerry's spirited contributions to the forum will be missed.

Regards,
Clayton

Jerry will be missed by many but he will live on in many ways. Earlier
tonight I swapped out my old black ink for Gen4. It was 100% at
Jerry's urging. I was really looking forward to discussing it with him.

While Jerry certainly was a man of strong opinions, he certainly had
no problems saying "OK, I took your suggestion and tried it and I see
your point".

I would appreciate a hard address to send a card to his wife. Off list
may be more appropriate.

Wow. How strange to be so affected by someone you've never even met.

I had some fun correspondence with Jerry over the print exchange, and he
was such a fixture on this list, and others. How often did he step up to
answer the same new user questions over and over again? I don't know how
many times I've seen posts and thought to myself "Jerry's going have
something to say about this". What a guy.

And who's going to fight with Austin now!?

Let's hope that Jerry's now got an endless supply of Photo Rag, and all
the digital toys he was too cheap to buy for himself... I hear they've
got the REALLY black ink up there too...

If anyone has contact information for Jerry I would appreciate it if you would send it to me off list.

I would like to let his family know how many friends and contacts he made via the Internet over the past few years and how much we valued his friendship. Often we are here communicating at length but our "real world" friends and family may have no idea how many people we contact.

It is natural for people to come and go on a list like this as time, interest and life's obligations make their demands. Often we don't really notice when someone is no longer posting until months later we think, "I wonder whatever happened to..." With Jerry's passing I now wonder if some of them may have also passed away unnoticed here. Unless there was some connection to list members besides the list itself, we would never know.

I agree Martin. I was going to try to send a card to someone, was he
married? Any kids? To give my heartfelt sorrow for his untimely passing,
and to let them know how much I appreciate Jerry. If you get that contact
information, I'd appreciate it if you wouldn't mind passing it along to me.

Regards,

Austin

Lovely idea Martin, you would communicate that very well.

I really feel very sorry about that. I think he was one of the
members that took the new digital printing world very seriously. We
will all miss him and his observations

This truly is sad news. I'm having a hard time understanding why
Jerry's passing has affected me as deeply as it has, to the point where
I'm having a hard time typing. We never met, we never spoke, we hardly
even corresponded. But I, like Jerry, have been a regular participant
in the various print exchanges. Consequently, I have a wonderful
collection of his work and feel like I know him through his images. I'm
glad I took the time to tell him how much I enjoyed his most recent
image in the April exchange(Prairie Memories-it's on his web site).
I know his legacy will live on. Not only in his images but also in the
memories of those of us he unknowingly touched. When I read the news of
Jerry's passing I felt a light go out, the world will now be just a
little bit dimmer.

I have now returned to Greece from Washington DC and have read the
many warm posts concerning the late Jerry Olson. I intended, during
my visit to telephone Jerry and Clayton Jones to thank them in person
for their generosity and kindness in assisting me in enhancing my
digital b&w skills, and to build on internet derived relationships.

Thus it was that, last Friday at the end of a week of meetings, I
telephoned Jerry's number and asked the lady who answered the phone
if I could speak with him. I was shocked and dismayed to be told
that he had passed away that morning. I expressed my condolences,
explained who I was and said that I had wanted to speak to him while
I was in the US for a chat and to thank him for his help to me.

I then contacted Clayton and asked him, since I had no internet
access, if he would pass on the message to the group. I would like
to thank Clayton for doing this and apologize for my inference that
the lady to whom I spoke was his wife not his mother as subsequently
transpired. I am sorry for my presumption.

I have just revisited Jerry's website: his artistry is self evident
even on a small screen. I had thought of buying a print last
Christmas but did not get round to it...choosing was one of the
problems. I now regret not doing so.

Keith Kreb's suggestion of a memorial trust is a good one and, maybe,
I can buy a print through this, although buying on ebay from outside
North America is not often possible.

A good photographer friend of mine from when I lived in Silver
Spring, MD, in the mid eighties passed on last February. I fear his
images will be lost forever. I hope Jerry's will survive. There is
so much artistry that seldom gains the public recognition it should,
and this was ever so: but, perhaps, in this digital age the prospects
will be better.

Never having spoken to him, I did not know Jerry but, nonetheless,
I'll miss him.
