I don't think it IS safe from information-preservation point of view - at least, assuming you started out with a 1bit/channel scan. Because you must convert to 8bit before you can use Adjustment layers, but if you're changing levels or curves in 8bit mode, you can definitely lose info if you are compresing/expanding tonal ranges much. Maybe I am issing something though - I've a relative newbie. John
