There has been talk of using the CFS/CIS just for the color-position inks
and using carts for the black ink.

When I used a CIS on my 1160, I did what I think you are talking about,
although for other reasons. I separated the black line and had separate
black inks. It worked, but barely. With the 1160 -- a quad -- the tubing
ribbon with only 3 lines became unstable, flopping all over the place. I
was usually able to tape the black line onto the other 3 and get it so that
it would not catch on anything, but I always worried about that possibility.
It often took a number of different tape positions to finally get the setup
to the point where even in slow motion testing the tubes stayed where the
were supposed to be.

Because of my marginal luck with taping the black tube on the other 3, I
don't recommend using CFS/CISs this way on 1160s. I now just fill empty
carts each time.

With hextone printers, I think a 5-tube ribbon would be fine. Whether it'll
stay stable when you try to tape on the 6th/black like is an open question.
Give it a try and let us know. Be sure to test the setup manually by moving
the carriage back and forth to see where that tubing ribbon is going to flop
to.

Good luck.
