Usually a print is located slightly higher than the middle of a mat. It is done this way for a couple of reasons. First, if it is dead center, your perception makes you believe that the bottom edge is smaller than the to edge. To offset this error in perception, the print is located slightly higher than the middle. The other reason is that if you sign your work, this takes up some space. To make the print with signature appear centered, usually artists move the print up a little. Lastly, every media has it's traditions. Photography being a "graphic art" such as print making (lithographs, etching, silkscreens, etc.) has borrowed from their traditions. Russ Martin [Non-text portions of this message have been removed]
