Hi Richard... Sounds like what you have is a need for lubrication. The metal rod upon which the print head travels has dried out and the printer's own self preservation routine is to stop the head short as if it has hit something. You can remedy this by spraying a little WD40 or similar lubricant onto a paper towel and wiping the rod down while the heads are parked. That should get it moving again.
