I agree. WD-40 is not intended as a lubricant.

A tiny amount of sewing machine oil does the trick. I wipe the rod with
a clean soft cloth (old handkerchief), then apply the oil to the rod
with a cotton bud.

I'll say it again: A tiny amount is enough.
