John, Try lowering the GRAY_HIGHLIGHT=11 to a lower value. I think that the higher this number is the steeper the curve in the highlights. I don't know what the value should be for your case but go low, say 2, and then raise it if necessary. If you are going to linearize the curve anyway, just set low values for both highlight and shadow.
