QTR2 for Linux

2003-08-25 by Roger L Sopher

With lots of help from Daniel Staver I have QTR2 up and going on a RedHat
9.0 linuxbox. I also was able to get it going with SuSE 8.2 Mandrake 9.1
is a nice distribution but not for this purpose since they changed the names
of some cups files making it very very problematic to install. I am not
familiar with Debian but several on the list are and perhaps they would be
willing to chime in. The installation is less than intuitive but isn't
particularly difficult once the system begins to make some sort of logical
sense. At this point I can print directly from Linux but the next step for
me will be to do a printer share so that printing can be done from
wintel/photoshop. Daniel has been able to do that for some time.

At this point I would say that this is a practical solution but only if you
are willing to build a little "sweat equity" in becoming somewhat familiar
with Linux. If you have a UNIX background you have it knocked. The
installation of Linux produces a lovely windows-like desk top but most of
the installation is done at the command line level, something that most
windows users haven't become familiar with since the demise of dos.

A nice thing about Linux is that it is inherently more stable than windows
and it will run on pretty much any intel/amd based machine that is a 486 or
better. No question, faster is better as is lots of ram memory.

Daniel has agreed to work with me to produce a "how to" (thank God, since he
is miles ahead of me) which when it has some semblance of proper English and
logic we will make available.

Roger
