QTR2 for Linux

QTR2 for Linux

2003-08-25 by Roger L Sopher

With lots of help from Daniel Staver I have QTR2 up and going on a RedHat
9.0 linuxbox. I also was able to get it going with SuSE 8.2 Mandrake 9.1
is a nice distribution but not for this purpose since they changed the names
of some cups files making it very very problematic to install. I am not
familiar with Debian but several on the list are and perhaps they would be
willing to chime in. The installation is less than intuitive but isn't
particularly difficult once the system begins to make some sort of logical
sense. At this point I can print directly from Linux but the next step for
me will be to do a printer share so that printing can be done from
wintel/photoshop. Daniel has been able to do that for some time.

At this point I would say that this is a practical solution but only if you
are willing to build a little "sweat equity" in becoming somewhat familiar
with Linux. If you have a UNIX background you have it knocked. The
installation of Linux produces a lovely windows-like desk top but most of
the installation is done at the command line level, something that most
windows users haven't become familiar with since the demise of dos.

A nice thing about Linux is that it is inherently more stable than windows
and it will run on pretty much any intel/amd based machine that is a 486 or
better. No question, faster is better as is lots of ram memory.

Daniel has agreed to work with me to produce a "how to" (thank God, since he
is miles ahead of me) which when it has some semblance of proper English and
logic we will make available.

Roger

Roger,

I definitely salute your efforts and Daniel's and Roy's. One of the prime
reasons Antonis and I set up this group was in hopes that this type of
technical advance might be achieved by the users independent of the
manufacturers. I don't have to tell you that your efforts are also in
keeping with the entire spirit of the Linux endeavor. Right on!!

Please share with us your "how to" as and when it is ready. I will
definitely post it in the Files sections for all to read.

Once you are able to print directly from Photoshop running in Windows to
QuadTone running under Linux this will be the ideal solution for us non-Mac
users. A much better choice than having to save the file and then open it on
some used Mac to print. By now a lot of us should have old Win/Tel boxes
sitting around that should be up to the task. Hopefully in a couple of weeks
I will have an 1200GHz AMD with 1.5 GB RAM available to set up as a print
server and you can talk me through it. I have never run Unix or Linux but
spent a lot of time with DOS so a command line is not unfamiliar.

Thanks,
Martin Wesley

As soon as I get the strange spraying of the Eboni black in my
9000 solved I would like to print from the Linux system directly
instead of using Samba/Windows. I have seen that the Gimp
interferes with QTR while I can see with Yast/Cups in Suse that
everything is properly installed. Are there simple bitmap
programs in Linux instead of the Gimp that allow me to use QTR ?
I rather send the imagefile and have the Linux box do the work
than get two systems running on one task.

BTW that strange spraying happens with all the three 9x00
printers a friend and I have loaded with Eboni black. It was one
of the first pint sets that came from MIS. Anyone else
experienced this ? The other greys, toners and 7600 colours are
alright.

Do you mean gimp or gimp-print.
AFAIK QTR is a plugin for gimp-print and will not work without it!

Is it possible there was some residual dye on the parking pads -- even maybe
the dyes that were in the old black pigmented inks? I think Eboni on the
pads can react with old dye and make solids that then stick onto the heads.
I had some problems with a 1280 that had been using dyes, and it was
eliminated as soon as I thoroughly rinsed/cleaned the pads (with Windex --
an ammonia solution, I think).

There may be a way to print in Linux with Roy's QTR2 via gimp but I haven't
found it. You can print directly using qtcups. from a terminal just enter
qtcups "printer file name" (excluding the quotation marks.
