Relevant to QT Rip 2 - Question on using Samba on a Windoze network...

2003-08-26 by Editor P.O.V. Image Service

Ok.. Here's the deal.. I'm about to re-add a Linux box to my WinLAN.

All the boxes are currently running XP pro..

I'll install Linux and Samba on the machine I'll then use as a printserver..

.Two questions:

1) When using QT Rip 2 I assume I'll need to actually print from
Linux... or is there a way I can print from PShop on my Winboxes and
then invoke QT Rip 2?

2) When I print from my Winboxes to a printer via Samba, am I correct
to assume that I am still using the Windows driver? (i.e. just change
the ports to the correct ones and do my standard printing as before?)

It's been over a year since I played with Linux.. Any help will be
greatly appreciated..

Samba and CUPS are integrated together nicely, and modern versions of
both should be included in any current Linux distro. I think here on
the group we're encouraging people to use RedHat, Debian, or SUSE.
Anything other than Mandrake. CUPS and Samba dovetail nicely, so you
would be able to browse your windows network and find the QTR printer
from windows.

Is a good place to start. I have a better troubleshooting guide at
home, I'll post it after I get out of the office today.

Actually, you would be using a CUPS postscript driver, which your
Windows machine can retrieve from the printer machine via Samba. You'll
get a stripped down gui with just enough drop down boxes to blend curves.
