The discussion on plug-ins for grayscale conversion of RGB images is an interesting one. A couple of weeks ago, I shared in our GoodiesNEWS newsletter one of the workflows we use for converting to grayscale which Gary Rogers, of R9, first showed me a couple of months ago. It's fairly simple, but does a wonderful job in terms of preserving a good black while keeping smooth tonal gradations and no going flat. We converted the workflow into a Photoshop Action which we are sharing FREE of charge. You can just go to: http://inkjetgoodies.com/main/psactions.htm to download it and install it. Please note that it is a free service to the community and we will not be supporting it beyond giving it away. Essentially it does the following: Step 1. Create New Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer with the following properties: Mode: Saturation Hue: -180 Saturation: -100 Lightness: +100 Step 2. Convert LAB Color. Choose the Flatten Option if given. Step 3. Open the Channels Window and delete Channels 'A' and 'B' Step 4. Convert to Grayscale. There are literally dozens of ways to convert an image. Many are very good. This is the one that has given us the best consistent results day in and out. And it didn't cost a thing! On a side note, Septone is now shipping!
