Free Photoshop Actions for Grayscale Conversion [was plug-ins]

Free Photoshop Actions for Grayscale Conversion [was plug-ins]

2003-08-28 by Gregory Schern

The discussion on plug-ins for grayscale conversion of RGB images is
an interesting one. A couple of weeks ago, I shared in our
GoodiesNEWS newsletter one of the workflows we use for converting to
grayscale which Gary Rogers, of R9, first showed me a couple of
months ago. It's fairly simple, but does a wonderful job in terms of
preserving a good black while keeping smooth tonal gradations and no
going flat. We converted the workflow into a Photoshop Action which
we are sharing FREE of charge. You can just go to:
http://inkjetgoodies.com/main/psactions.htm to download it and
install it. Please note that it is a free service to the community
and we will not be supporting it beyond giving it away.

Essentially it does the following:

Step 1. Create New Hue/Saturation Adjustment Layer with the
following properties:
Mode: Saturation
Hue: -180
Saturation: -100
Lightness: +100

Step 2. Convert LAB Color. Choose the Flatten Option if given.

Step 3. Open the Channels Window and delete Channels 'A' and 'B'

Step 4. Convert to Grayscale.

There are literally dozens of ways to convert an image. Many are
very good. This is the one that has given us the best consistent
results day in and out. And it didn't cost a thing!

On a side note, Septone is now shipping!

Good Luck

i just downloaded it with explorer on a mac by holding
down the mouse botton and hit "save link as...",
safari would not work and hitting link alone didn't
work either. the action does work.

Anyone else not able to download the file? I tried in OSX Safari,
Netscape, and IE. Can someone who has successfully downloaded it please
post it in the files section of this e-group or e-mail it to me
directly.
Thanks,
Mark

Kay,

Don't feel dumb. It isn't very intuitive.

Put the downloaded action in the Photoshop->Presets->Photoshop
Actions folder. At least in PS6 that's what you do. If PS is open
close it and restart it. Then see the history and Actions Tab? To
the right there's an arrow. Click that and select Load Actions.
Find your action, select it and hit load. That's it.

Open your image, click on the Action tab and look for Goodies_v1.01,
select the arrow next to it so it's pointing down and then select
Grayscale Conversion. Then at the very bottom you'll see an arrow
pointing to the right, select it and you're off.

Tom
