I am a fairly new USA user of the Epson 2200 and I am attempting to use the Epson Gray balancer. I've downloaded an English version of the software and am using the Kodak Gray Scale card. I am confused on what print settings to use when printing the initial "tortoise shell" test target. An on-line tutorial and the Epson Gray balancer documentation both say "print" but do not discuss whether to print with "Color Controls" or "ICM, No color Adjustment." I have printed two test targets on Epson Premium Semigloss at 1440 dpi with Photo Black ink, one using the default "Color Controls, Gamma 1.8" and one using "ICM, No color Adjustment (NCA)." The test prints are significantly different. Which one should I use? In production, I intend to use the "ICM, NCA" setting in the Epson driver and ICC profiles in Photoshop 7.0. However, the Epson Gray Balancer test grid looks strange when printed with "ICM/NCA." The 90% grid is solid black, with no visible difference in any of the squares. The 70% grid has a green color cast. The 45% grid has a blue- green color cast, and the 20% grid has a magenta cast on the top half and a blue-green cast on the bottom half. In the "Color Controls, Gamma 1.8" version, the 90% grid has a magenta cast on the top and a green cast on the bottom, and the individual squares are visibly different. All the other grids (70%, 45%, 20%) have a strong magenta cast. I understand I may have to go to the "Realignment" step to get differentiation in the 90% grid, but I would appreciate your advice on which Epson print driver settings to use.
