RE: SPAM -- [Digital BW] New Pictures Here...

2003-10-01 by Martin Wesley

Paul,

Thanks for the warning. The post has been deleted and the sending e-mail
address has been banned

Antonis and I have kicked around some ideas of what to do about this recent
attack of hit-and-run spam. The only possibility aside from ignoring and
living with it would be to change the settings on the group so that the all
new members automatically are on Moderated status in regards to their posts.
In other words their initial post(s) would not go to the forum until either
I or Antonis approved it.

The plus side is that this would filter out all of the spam like the "New
Pictures Here..." type.

The down side is that Antonis and I are not always monitoring the list,
particularly where pending messages are shown. The result would be that new
members wanting to post for the first time would not get their message
posted for several hours to several days or weeks even. This would effect
the first post of people who lurked for a year or two before making a post
as well. No current member would be effected though. Also this would be more
work for us since we would have to manually take each new member off
Moderated status when they decided to start posting.

I am rather inclined to suffer with the junk but I would appreciate any
thoughts and opinions.

Martin
