Paul,

Thanks for the warning. The post has been deleted and the sending e-mail
address has been banned

Antonis and I have kicked around some ideas of what to do about this recent
attack of hit-and-run spam. The only possibility aside from ignoring and
living with it would be to change the settings on the group so that the all
new members automatically are on Moderated status in regards to their posts.
In other words their initial post(s) would not go to the forum until either
I or Antonis approved it.

The plus side is that this would filter out all of the spam like the "New
Pictures Here..." type.

The down side is that Antonis and I are not always monitoring the list,
particularly where pending messages are shown. The result would be that new
members wanting to post for the first time would not get their message
posted for several hours to several days or weeks even. This would effect
the first post of people who lurked for a year or two before making a post
as well. No current member would be effected though. Also this would be more
work for us since we would have to manually take each new member off
Moderated status when they decided to start posting.

I am rather inclined to suffer with the junk but I would appreciate any
thoughts and opinions.

Martin

Martin,

As the popularity of this list and also of Yahoo's increases, the
more likely this list will become prone to spam attacks.

The Russian Camera group of Bob Shell fame, finally had to move to
another list (Beststuff) because of spam attacks. Have a look at that
list to see what's its like when the spammers take over.
http://groups.yahoo.com/group/russiancamera/

The group finally moved to:
http://www.beststuff.com/forum/index.php?f=25

Another possibility would be an email forum such as the Prodig
listserv. They have a listmum on weekly rotation duty. They are spam
free, as far as I know.
http://www.prodig.org/

And then there is the Topica lists, where John Browlow (who used to
be active on this list) founded a street photography group.
Topica being less known than Yahoo is more likely to be under the
radar of spammers.
http://www.topica.com/lists/streetphoto

The above are just examples, not even suggestions. There may be
problems with these lists that I may not be aware of.

As long as the spam is tolerable, and we dont break into hives(?)
when one is posted, I say let's go on as usual.
Cheers,
Andre

RE: SPAM -- [Digital BW] New Pictures Here...

2003-10-02 by Martin Wesley

Andre,

Thanks for the feedback. With the help of Tom O'Connell and other group
members we took a hard look at moving about a year ago due to the steep rise
in advertising that started hitting us. I even created a trial list on
Topica which I also discovered through John's lists.

From what we gathered at the time the group members tracked posts both on
line and by e-mail, and the number of people who did one or the other was
pretty evenly divided. Most of the free forum sites out there are either one
or the other but not both. On top of that Yahoo Groups offers the Files,
Links, and other sections off the homepage.

I did find one service in the UK that had identical features but a trial
forum there did not work since they apparently did not have any servers
outside the UK and it took messages 12 to 24 hours to propagate to and from
the site. So Yahoo's worldwide network of servers is important to us since
the group has members all over the place.

I even took a look at what it would take to set everything up on a private
site and got annual costs of $5,000 to $10,000 plus management time.

So here we still are. I took a look at Beststuff.com but it appears to be an
on-line only site with no e-mail.

If you should see something that has all the Yahoo features let me know.

As to the current spammers, someone has obviously figured out a way to
automatically join a whole bunch of Yahoo groups simultaneously, drop in a
post and then leave. I am surprised Yahoo has not picked up on this and
taken some action although I suspect it is hard to block given their open
structure.

Hopefully at this point we are all wise enough not to click on anonymous
links and I will keep deleting the stuff as I see it. Still toying with
moderating all new members. I may give it a try for awhile just to see how
much work it turns out to be.

Martin

Hi Paul,

Just my .02 if you don't mind...

I would vote to continue with your current procedure for handling these types of e-mails--deletion, banning, etc.--and live with the few that we're getting. I really don't think you and/or Antonis should be wasting what I'm sure is valuable time reviewing each and every post to the list. Just my opinion, of course.

Based on my experience with this forum, it seems that this recent spamming has been exactly that; pretty much recent...and really has not been that bad. For me, personally, when I see a message with no content other than something like "New picture here..." with a link I don't click on it. Also, after not too much time on this list one gets to the point of recognizing most of the "usual suspects." Again, if I don't recognize the posters name, I don't click. Simple and effective!

Anyway, just my .02 as I said earlier. Thanks for listening.

I agree.

When one does find one of these, however, labeling it as such to save others
the time might be worth while.

I fully agree. SpamNet has blocked 11.347 spams to my account in just a
few months. Compared to that volume I don't consider a few emails on the
list every week a significant problem. Certainly nothing worth the
trouble of moving the entire list or anything like that.

I partially agree. This kind of spam are in all of the yahoogroups and when
someone are subscribed to some of them they are more than a few emails. Some
kind of approve when someone subscribe like to require all members to
provide some contact info like the full name and/or a registrated email. (
not those hotmails or yahoo mail ) could be a possible solution.
Best regards
Aitor, that have a real problem with the Spam, more than 100 per day

Alan,

Just to clarify things, we were only considering placing new members on
moderated status when they first join the group. This would have no effect
on current members. Only the first post of new members would be reviewed and
if it was appropriate for the list they would be taken off of moderated
status and their future posting would not be reviewed. This procedure would
cut off the spammers but at the cost of new members not being able to
immediately post to the group in the middle of the night to get help with a
printing problem when they have a deadline the next morning.

No way would I place the entire group on moderated status! That would kill
it off quicker than any amount of spam.

Aitor,

That would solve the spam problem but it would be impossible for us to
devote the time required to process all the new members. The list is growing
fast with sometimes as many as 10 to 20 people joining in a single day.
There is a lot of coming and going so the rate of people joining is even
higher than the 3400 membership suggests.

Ouch! You need a Spam filter!

Agreed. Sorry, I meant to address my message to Martin. And, thank you to all forum members labelling SPAM as such to avoid others opening it.

OK. I didn't fully understand what you were suggesting in your original message. However, even moderating a new user's first post would cause, IMO, unnecessary effort from you and/or Antonis and, as you said, might be an issue for the poster. We are all familiar with the occasional minor "frustrations" of quality quadtone printing and having a group like this where one can get nearly immediate response is GREAT! I think you would agree that when dealing with some of the issues we all face one just wants a quick resolution to an annoying problem.

This is a general rule in my house. I also do not open e-mails forwarded through someone I know unless I know for fact that their e-mail is, at least, scanned for viruses.
