It's possible that OPM lays down max black ink plus all the colors. I know that the standard Epson driver manages to print a tad darker in color mode than in BO mode (at least with Photo Black on Premium Luster), but it takes a colorimeter to tell the difference. But I wouldn't call the BO black remotely "gray" on that paper. The only thing I can think of is that you've got a bad batch of black, which OPM manages to hide under the color ink.
