2 questions, re BO and OPM

2003-10-25 by Antara Scales

Hi,
 (1) I just printed with BO on 2200, making sure R=0 for Black
and it still came out gray. I guess this is a question for Clayton.
How do you get deep blacks?

(2)I've been using OPM only for my B&W prints on 2200. Its free!
They are in shows and a gallery. What are others experience
with using OPM, without buying the IJ software?
Thanks for your comments

It's hard for me to know what you're doing, so I can't say for sure,
but please read the Part 3 of my articles on my web site. It gives
details on how I set up the printer and how I work in PhotoShop.

Stay away from matte papers. Premium Luster looks nice, and at least doesn't
have the coherent reflections that glossy does.

I disagree that matte paper, per se, could be blamed for
producing a "gray" Dmax. With matte papers such as EEM and
HWM there should be no trouble obtaining Dmax of around 1.65,
which surely ain't gray (IMHO).

True, but the blacks are definitely darker on Premium Luster. I can see it,
and so can my colorimeter. Some people find the 2200 blacks on matte paper
just plain unacceptable, including the woman who sold me her 2200 and went
back to her 1280. I guess it depends upon what you're used to.

I am comparing BO to the black I get with Ultrachrome using
OPM. Both are on matte paper, EAM and German Etch.
The lack of black has nothing to do with the paper. So what am I
doing wrong, since Clayton and others say you can get black
using BO?

Antara;

Are you perhaps using the Photo Black ink? That is the stock setup
for the 2200 I believe, but Epson sells a matte black ink which gets
a better Dmax on matte papers, including I would think the EEM. The
stock Photo Black does much better, but only on the RC papers like
premium luster and glossy.

Anataras,

What is OPM?

It's possible that OPM lays down max black ink plus all the colors. I know
that the standard Epson driver manages to print a tad darker in color mode
than in BO mode (at least with Photo Black on Premium Luster), but it takes
a colorimeter to tell the difference. But I wouldn't call the BO black
remotely "gray" on that paper.

The only thing I can think of is that you've got a bad batch of black, which
OPM manages to hide under the color ink. I've gotten bad ink before, on a
different printer.

I've tried to find that on the web, but couldn't. Got a link, or a company
name?

www.bowhaus.com
If you read the discussion with Clayton, he helped me resolve
the no black thing. It was just printer settings. (-:

I don't see anything in BowHaus's web site that has anything to do with Open
PrintMaker.

Strange that they don't have a link at the top level.

It's at www.bowhaus.com/inkjetcontrol

"The lack of black has nothing to do with the paper."

In my experience, it has EVERYTHING (almost) to do with the paper.

You took my statement out of context. Of course paper is
important.
What I meant was that the paper I was using did not lack any
ability to portray black, because it showed black with another
kind of printout. The paper wasn't the problem, in other words. I
was having trouble getting black with BO printing, which resolved
itself went I had the right workflow.

CFS / CIS recommendation

2003-10-27 by James Haney

My old No-more-carts CIS for my 1160 finally needs replacing. Any
suggestions before I decide to build my own from MIS parts and my old unit?

Re: CFS / CIS recommendation

No, but the best reason for buying MIS is that they come with a
lifetime replacement guarantee so you wouldn't have to buy anything
new ever... they'd just be sent to you free, no questions asked.

mark

PS ...just a happy customer:)
